• Full time fixed term until 30 November 2025, located on the Camperdown Campus at the School of School of Life and Environmental Sciences.

• Base Salary Level A $113,184 p.a. – $134,403 p.a. + 17% superannuation.

About the opportunity

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Fellow who is passionate about restoration, ‘rewilding’ and prevention of further wildlife loss in Australia. Working with seven Councils and three State government agencies in northern Sydney, you will be working on an exciting project that will experimentally assess a new approach to conservation by restoring regionally-present but locally-missing wildlife. Expected outcomes include the restoration of ecosystem services provided by wildlife and increased opportunities for community engagement with nature. Project benefits include initiating rewilding in urban areas, improved public education on the benefits of restoring wildlife and greater potential to conserve our biodiversity and cultural heritage.

The successful candidate will take a leading role as a postdoctoral fellow working across both the ecological and social science components of the project, including but not limited to leading field surveys, surveying public/community attitudes towards rewilding, and community engagement activities. A key objective within the term of employment will be to help identify suitable areas and species for rewilding whilst also leading high-level publication outputs on future opportunities for restoring wildlife in urban areas. The candidate will work closely with honours and PhD students on the project.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• Work closely with project partners and chief investigators to achieve the project objectives.
• Provide leadership and assist the ecological and social science surveys being undertaken by PhD and Honours students.
• Lead high-level publications on topics related to urban wildlife restoration and rewilding in Australia and globally.
• Co-author or lead publications from data collected during the ecological and social science components of the project.
• Develop communication strategies to promote the project achievements and outputs.
• Assist with general project management including ethics and permitting.

The School of Life and Environmental Sciences (SOLES) brings together researchers in the life, earth, and environmental sciences to improve teaching and build new infrastructure to support and enhance capacity in research and teaching.

• A PHD in a related field.
• The ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team of researchers.
• A track record working in conservation related research in Australia or Internationally.
• Experience undertaking and leading ecological field surveys.
• An ability to work across both ecological and social science components of the project.
• Demonstrated ability to produce high-level synthesis and review papers, as well as more data focused publication outputs.
• Experience working with large datasets and undertaking complex statistical and spatial modelling.
